Malibu Meadows, Los Angeles, California

It’s been a little while and I’m a bit behind on my blog posts, but I wanted to share an engagement session that I photographed in the Malibu hills. This is the second part of Kimey & Victor’s shoot that we finished up the day after taking some engagement photographs at the Viceroy Hotel. We couldn’t have asked for more from our afternoon in Malibu. The weather was perfect and the place is absolutely gorgeous! We headed out, excited to make a day of it armed with a picnic basket full of snacks and some fun board games to pass the time.

With the sun on our face and smiles in hand, we spent the afternoon running around open meadows and wild fields. It is truly amazing there. The relaxing sound of the nearby babbling creek, the warmth of the California sun and the abundance of wildlife everywhere…it is all rather dreamy and enchanting. I can’t think of a better place for an afternoon picnic in Los Angeles. Having grown up in Los Angeles, I’m always amazed at what this city has to offer. Who’d have thought a couple miles from downtown LA that you could find such a serene and rustic place like this. I guess Los Angeles isn’t as all Hollywood glitz and concrete drab that we usually think it to be, there are plenty of hidden gems like this. I’m excited for summer and the opportunity it’ll provide to explore more of the hidden parts of Los Angeles. I hope you enjoy the photographs from the picnic and meadow engagement session shoot we did.open_meadows_wild_field_dreamy_romantic_california_sun_rusticMalibu has such lovely fields of gold and rolling hills that go on forever. Viceroy Hotel, Santa Monica, California

Cocktails at the Viceroy Hotel! Kimey and Victor wanted to celebrate their engagement with some sophisticated style.  So we headed over to Santa Monica to the Viceroy for a couple drinks, some laughs and a few photographs.  It’s always fun times hanging out with these two.  Victor’s good-hearted nature and Kimey’s infectious humor always seem to keep me in good spirits.  The Viceroy has some pretty cool signature drinks, so we spent the afternoon talking over drinks and intermittently taking a few photographs.  It was a fun day.  Cheers to you two, I can’t wait to shoot your wedding.

Santa Monica Pier Engagement Photography, Los Angeles, California
Engagement Sessions for Close Friends

I first met Matt in junior high days, sixth grade to be exact.  He had the same backyard mom-given bowl haircut as mine, but his was far worse.  It made me feel pretty good about myself and we soon became friends.  That was back in the day when oversized jnco pants and movies like boys in the hood were the bees knees.  I’m not sure why he carried around a wallet with hello kitty ducks on it, but he said the ladies dug it.  Ironically, the only chicks who dug it were the ones on the wallet.

When we moved on to highschool, he let me borrow his takamine guitar to learn on and didn’t mind that I had it for lengthy stretches of time.  Later in college we started a band.  We had no drummer, no bassist and no singer…but we definitely rocked.  We wasted more time thinking of cool band names than actually playing any songs together.  In ucla, we were just a dorm away from each other.  He got addicted to the internet and I developed an “i am late everywhere i go” problem.  We went to church together and since I was car-less he gave me a lot of rides everywhere.  We spent a lot of time hanging out in Melrose, searching for some non-existent shoes.  He lived right next door to the campus arcade where I had a part-time job at.  He’d come over and we’d steal drinks from the adjacent cafeteria, play free arcade games and make fake employee-of-the-month signs with my name on it.  Once, I mistakenly scheduled a shifts that overlapped with a midterm.  He covered it for me without a worry.

When I graduated and moved to new york to work a finance banking gig, he used to call my office line from a blocked number and say, “I want stock.”  My job had nothing to do with selling stock, but this was his way of staying in touch.  He came to visit and complained about having to walk everywhere, but he quickly shutup when he saw we were walking to a Vespa store.  He crashed on my miniature-sized couch that my roommate and I put in our kitchen (because there was no where else to put it).  When I moved to san francisco, he was the first one to fly up and visit me.  It was a nice welcome back to the west coast.

I’ve known this guy for a while now and I’ve known Michelle possibly even longer.  When I met up with them to take some quick engagement photographs, Michelle (the world-renown blogger) asked me what I was going to write about them on the blog.  She jokingly laughed as she exclaimed, you should begin the blog entry with an, “I loooooooove Matt and Michelle!!“  Haha, well yeah something like that.  Singularly, these two are pretty imperfect…but together they’re perfect for each other.  Cheers to the new life and thanks for asking me to be a part of the wedding party.

The Santa Monica pier photos above are Matt & Michelle. This is what they’re like to hang out with in person: a fun-loving bunch that not even pictures or a thousand words can describe. Congratulations.
